Obviously you have more knowledge in the area. I live in Mississippi and the wind map shows we have very little wind. Do you think that a sail would make using the current technology actually economical?

Lifting it vertically adds the need to counteract gravity as well, which is taken care of in the case of a yacht by the water it displaces, discounting waves, of course (not that one would want to, in the sea).

However, does this still leave some grounds for fallacy in the energy conversion potential calculation?

This would be true if you were lifting that weight vertically, but you are not — you are sliding it horizontally and the sail force is only being used to overcome the drag of the ship as it moves through the air and water. This makes the calculation look impressive, but the reality is far less so. The diesel engine on board is 690 Horsepower and probably operates at 60% to achieve the same 5 knots of speed.
